Mini mixture of dried, naturally fragrant plant material, used to provide a gentle natural scent in houses

I have been walking the perimeter of the campus during my lunches this week. I’m digging it but, man! I sure wore the wrong shoes today. Tomorrow might be raining and if so, it will curtail my ambulatory activities.

LOTRO was doing some trivia quizzes today on twitter. A tweep of mine won one of the contests, but as she already had the prize (a special mount from PAX East), she gave the code to me! Yay for special in-game items!

I’ve been listening to the CBC at work. I have no idea why the thought of the Pacific NorthWest is so appealing. My chest aches with longing whenever I think about it too much.

Tonight was the Knights Officers’ Meeting.

Among the items discussed were:

  • Fish Fry – I have discussed this here already so all I will add is that we decided to not have tilapia, rice, and beans when we do our next one in April.
  • Retention – We reaffirmed that the Deputy Grand Knight is the chairman of the Retention Committee and that the Trustees are all members.
  • First Degree Team – We’d like to certify a new team to serve from now until June 30, 2012. I will ask Steve if he is willing, and would like, to continue as the Grand Knight of the First Degree team. If he is, I will ask him to put together the team (I have several names of men who’d like to be on the team).
  • Elections for 2011/2012 – The current officers will again put forth a slate of candidates for next year. Bill is planning to run for GK, so I will be retiring as scheduled. Dan will run for DGK, and most other officers will run for their current office. This leaves Warden to be filled. I am going to ask Ruben if he would consider running for that position. We also would like to take the roles of Inside and Outside Guard more seriously.

None of this is secret or confidential, but you are getting a preview here. 🙂

Something to do

Today consisted of

  • waking up not according to some predetermined schedule, but when my body was done sleeping (spring forward, who cares?)
  • watching some tv (an episode of V to be precise)
  • going to Mass (the music continues to be mediocre)
  • lunching at Sips Bistro with Steve and Fr. Ramon (I had the Chicken Cesar Wrap.)
  • spending a couple of hours at the milonga at Azucar (Silvia and I had made plans to go. It was mostly tango, but also a smattering of many other styles. Mary in particular was very kind and asked me to dance several times. If you know me, you know I like dancing and have no problem with partner dancing, I actually prefer it, but I do need to know the steps.)
  • more tv (forthcoming. Perhaps some Being Human or Ordinary Family. I should watch the dvd I have from Netflix, The Island.)
  • LOTRO (Aluatis needs to continue with Volume 1.)
  • posting here (which I just finished.)

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end

Ok, I’m moved to this new site now. It’s not ‘done’, but it’s far enough along that I shall delay no further.

I’m having a tough time at work this week. Not as tough as many others; I’m not slated to lose my job. I feel bad for those who are staring down the barrel of unemployment, particularly my friends. But that’s not what’s getting to me. At least I think it not what’s getting to me….

No, I’m experiencing what I think are panic or anxiety attacks. It’s all the fracking commotion around me and the fact that there are numerous times throughout the week that I can hear (and not shut out) no fewer than 4 or 5 gorram conversations happening at once. And Lordy! the way people yell and shout at each other. It’s maddening! (Did I spell that right??)
I’m think I’m going to see about getting a prescription for some anxiety medication. But I won’t be doing that soon. Got lots of other stuff to spend money on over the next few months.

Things are gonna be much better if you only will

How long do you think you could go without a shower?

Interestingly enough, I was just discussing last week the length of time I am able to go without a shower. I have had several extra days off over the past couple of months. On some of those days, I’ve managed to sleep in until 10 AM or later. Having nothing really to do on many of these days, I’ve tried to see if I can just skip a shower. At best I’ve made it until about 7 PM and then I just can’t stand it anymore, I have to shower. I HATE feeling gross and sticky! Perhaps if my hair was a lot shorter, I could power though until I went to bed again, but as it is, no way.

Did you know: The modern domestic shower was invented in the early 1800s (via wikipedia). For hundreds of years before that, in most of the world, people went their entire lives without ever taking a shower (and even today some of your coworkers probably still don’t shower enough).

You can’t take the sky from me

Firefly was one of my favorite television shows. I am forever upset with Fox for cancelling this show. To this day, I refuse to begin watching new shows on Fox because I have no faith that this idiot network will give the show time to find an audience. If a new show makes it past the first year, I’ll consider watching it on dvd or Netflix.

Here’s some recent news about Firefly.

Browncoats rejoice: Firefly is returning to basic cable — and Nathan Fillion has something to say about it.

The Science Channel has acquired the rights to the cult-hit and will air the series in its short-lived entirety, plus some new extras. Science Channel will wrap each episode with interstitial segments starring renowned physicist Dr. Michio Kaku, who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show’s sci-fi concepts

If I had a million dollars…

What would you do with a million dollars, tax free?

Feeling secure is a big concern of mine. But I spend money like crazy! How do those things fit together??

Anyway, if I had money, I’d move out of California, purchase a home, go to school full time, I would buy you some art (a Picasso or a Garfunkle), hire a pesonal assistant to help me get my life in order, travel, and pursue hobbies.
Also, I’d try to set it up so that the money was used to make more money so that I wouldn’t have to worry about my material needs again.

Geez, this stuff is easy.

Just another manic Monday

My salsa wasn’t really any better after chilling for a day. Ah well. I’ll use more tomatoes next time. And leave out the onion and garlic. I’ll use less cilantro too. I hate wasting food. 🙁 So I’m going to knuckle down and finish off this batch. It’s not terrible, just not good.

I only work the equivalent of 11 months per year. My office is kind enough to let me spread out my month off over the entire year. So I take off 14.5 hours each month. This month that means that I’ll take this Friday off and the 25th as well. Add to that the fact that President’s Weekend is 4 days, and I’m looking forward to some extra LOTRO and TV time. And it’s a good thing cause I’m falling way behind on both those things.

Biutiful tomorrow night and Harry Potter 7.1 on Wednesday.

Finished that steaming pile of crap called Dogtooth tonight. Blech!

Weekend recap

Kind of a quick weekend, but too busy as usual. Friday evening I went to a local photography meetup. It was alright. It’ll be better once the group figures out what it wants to be. Watched a movie to finish out the night.

Saturday, I went to my friend, Sarah’s, book launch. Her book is called The Latte Rebellion. I bought a copy and had her sign it. I did take some photos.
Afterwards, I stopped by the supermarket and bought some of the ingredients for the cabbage salsa I’ll be making for work. Then home to watch the second movie in the Harry Potter series.
In the evening, I went to my aunt & uncle’s place for a birthday / anniversary party. I was there for a couple of hours then I went over to Dorinda & Holly’s to watch another of the Harry Potter movies. That was just about all I could fit into the day and there was nothing left to do but go to bed.

Today, I watched 2 more HP movies on DVD, saw Country Strong at the theater, and finished up the evening with Winter’s Bone (from Netflix). Somewhere in there, I made a test batch of the salsa. I’m not real happy with it. I’m glad I tested before I inflicted it upon my coworkers.

Harrumph! You kids get out of my yard!

In general I consider myself an animal lover. Well, a dog lover anyway. I always try to say hello and give lots of attention to dogs when I encounter them. But I am really tired of dog owners afflicting their pets on me out in public. What is it that happens to people when they have pets? So many of them have no concern whatsoever about their dogs running up to me, barking, pawing at me, maybe biting. When my former roommate, Letitia got a dog, we used to walk Micky to the park. She thought nothing of letting Micky run free in unfenced areas. Who cares if he runs up on people or other animals? Hahaha! Just laugh it off. After all, Letitia knew that Micky meant no harm, and other people are supposed to read her mind and know that too, right? It always annoyed me. I’m a rather high self monitor I think. I often seem to be overly aware and concerned about how my actions may be affecting others around me. If only I could be truly anti-social and just not care.

Anyway, I hope I wasn’t like that when I had my dog, Chloe.

G’day Bruce!

Do you believe everything happens for a reason? Why or why not?

In theology/philosophy, there is a tension between the ideas of free will and predestination. The whole how can we have free will at the same time that God is almighty and has a plan for us debate. I really don’t see the contradiction here. To my thinking, we have absolute free will AND God knows exactly what and how we will choose and what the effect will be of that and every other choice. Really people, we cannot comprehend the massiveness, the awesomeness, of God. Anything we think we understand and know, it’s like nothing compared to the understanding and knowledge of God.

So to answer the question, I do believe everything happens for a reason. Because of choices that were made by someone or more likely many someones; because of the way God set up the universe, the laws of physics, nature. Even if we have to trace the cause of the thing back to the beginning of time, there is a reason.

Maybe what this question should have been is, “Is there meaning to everything that happens?” That, my friends, is a significantly different question.
